Evangelism Training at Church - Week 6

Tonight was week 6 teaching evangelism at Tri-Lakes Center church. We watched the Way of the Master episode, "The Motive of the Sinner". There were approx. 82 people here tonight.

I think folks were very responsive as to how important it is for a sinner to come to Christ for the biblical reason, which is to save them from the wrath to come...instead of coming to Christ for a better lifestyle.

I discussed my friend and brother in Christ that died today of cancer (Mitchell Barnett) as part of the teaching (he attended our church). If someone comes to Christ for a "better life", then when something bad happens, (like praying for our friend to be healed of cancer)--and it doesn't happen and he dies--someone that came to Christ for a happy lifestyle will likely fall away, become bitter towards God, and not want to have anything to do with Christians because they already tried it out and it "didn't work" as the Christians told them it would. They feel like they were lied to, and they really have the right to feel this way.

We shouldn't tell someone that Jesus will give them peace, love, joy and lasting happiness as a reason to come to Christ. If we do that, they will get "saved" for the wrong reasons. And like it is stated above, when something bad happens in their life, they will become angry with God. God did not promise Christians a happy, carefree life after they are born-again. He actually promised us temptation and tribulation. If we are born-again, and come to Christ for the purpose of missing hell and going to heaven, due to what Jesus did for us...it won't matter if we have problems in this life. We won't cast off the Lord Jesus when trials and temptations hit our life. Jesus will be with us through our problems. He will give us a peace that passes understanding, as the bible says.

One man said that he came to Christ for a "better life", and is it possible that someone can come to Christ for that reason and then change. I told him that it is possible to come to Christ for the "wrong reasons", but then have biblical training and learn the what it means to truly be born-again.

Overall, it was a good night. This upcoming Sunday our WOTM Sunday School class is beginning. We'll start watching the other episodes. The pastor named the class, "Winning Evangelism".
